Debra L. Stewart, Counsel
Debra Stewart represents both for-profit and not-for-profit entities in a wide range of corporate and business law matters. She handles commercial and transactional matters for closely held and family-owned businesses, and provides counsel on formation issues, including business entity selection and organizational structure. She also advises charitable organizations on corporate governance, “best practices” policies and procedures, regulatory compliance, fundraising, grant-making and the process of obtaining federal and state tax-exempt status. Ms. Stewart’s practice extends into her volunteer activities through frequent pro bono representation of charities and service on the Board of Directors of a community-based non-profit organization.
Ms. Stewart began her career as an associate at Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen & Hamilton, where she gained significant international experience representing foreign clients in mergers, acquisitions and joint ventures, as well as issuers and underwriters in capital markets transactions.
Ms. Stewart graduated, cum laude, from Tulane Law School in 1995, where she served as a Managing Editor of the Tulane Law Review. She received her M.A. in French Studies from New York University in 1992, and her B.A. in French and History, with distinction, from Indiana University, in 1990. She is highly proficient in French.
