Mary L. Smith Elected First Native American Woman to the American Bar Association’s Board of Governors
On August 4, 2009, during the American Bar Association’s (ABA) Annual Meeting in Chicago, Illinois, Mary L. Smith was elected the first Native American woman to the ABA’s Board of Governors in the Association’s over 130-year history.
The 38-member Board of Governors has the authority to act and speak for the ABA. It oversees the general operation of the Association. The Board is composed of 18 district representatives, 14 members-at-large, and the six officers of the ABA. Ms. Smith was elected the Minority Member-at-Large with a term expiring in 2012.
