Norman Greene will be speaking on diversity in the judiciary on June 16, 2010 at a conference entitled Race, Law and the Courts: Framing the Discussion for a Post Racial America. The conference is being hosted by the Franklin H. Williams Commission on Minorities and will be held at New York Law School. The Franklin H. Williams Commission has been an integral part of the New York State Judiciary’s efforts to ensure equal justice. The Commission has become a national model for how state court systems can work effectively to address issues of concern to minority employees, litigants and communities. Successful Motion in Foreclosure Action

The Firm successfully defeated a borrower’s counterclaim against firm client Bank of America, N.A. in a foreclosure action, permitting the foreclosure action to proceed. On May 11, 2010, the judge in Bank of America, N.A. v. Peresgranted Bank of America’s motion to dismiss the counterclaim, in which the borrower sought damages for the allegedly improper filing of a notice of pendency on his property.

Beth Kaufman Speaks at 10th Annual Women in Product Liability Regional Workshop

On October 15, 2009, Beth Kaufman spoke on professional development of women lawyers at the 10th Annual Women in Product Liability Regional Workshop, held in Chicago. The workshop, a program offered by the Product Liability Committee of the Section of Litigation of the American Bar Association (www.abanet.org/litigation/), was started by Ms. Kaufman when she chaired the Products Liability Committee from 1999-2002.

Charles Updike Appears as Speaker and Moderator at Annual Legal Seminar of the International Federation of Inspection Agencies in Geneva, Switzerland

The International Federation of Inspection Agencies (IFIA), a London-based trade association for the companies who do inspections and certifications worldwide, held its annual legal seminar in Geneva, Switzerland, from October 14 – 17, 2009. Mr. Updike addressed the group about anti-trust issues and trends and was the moderator of a panel discussion on current legal issues facing the industry.

Beth Kaufman Speaks at FDCC on Government Affairs and Legislation

On September 24, 2009, Beth Kaufman served as moderator of the governmental affairs and legislative initiatives panel at the Sixth Annual Corporate Counsel Symposium of the Federation of Defense and Corporate Counsel (www.thefederation.org), held in Dallas. Howard Kim, of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and Dan Shoman, former campaign aide to President Obama, presented their views of likely governmental initiatives and pending legislation.

Nancy A. Connery, Speaker at State Bar Association Program

Nancy A. Connery participated as a Speaker at the New York State Bar Association’s annual “Advanced Real Estate” course held on December 4, 2008. Her topic was “Current Issues in Purchase and Sale Contracts.” Focusing on the impact of the current economic environment on real estate sales contract negotiations, she discussed price renegotiations, the use of contingency clauses, preserving the down payment, purchase money mortgages, and other topics.

Beth Kaufman Named Second Circuit Representative to the ABA Standing Committee on the Federal Judiciary

Partner Beth Kaufman has been appointed by ABA President Carolyn Lamm to serve as the Second Circuit Representative on the ABA Standing Committee on the Federal Judiciary (http://www.abanet.org/scfedjud/home/), evaluates the professional qualifications of all nominees to the Supreme Court of the United States, circuit courts of appeals, district courts (including territorial district courts) and the Court of International Trade. The Committee’s goal is to support and encourage the selection of the best-qualified persons for the federal judiciary. It restricts its evaluation to issues bearing on professional qualifications and does not consider a nominee’s philosophy or ideology. The Committee’s peer-review process is structured to achieve impartial evaluations of the integrity, professional competence and judicial temperament of nominees for the federal judiciary.

As Second Circuit Representative, Ms. Kaufman will evaluate all nominees to the 2d Circuit Court of Appeals, and the U.S. District Courts in Connecticut, New York and Vermont. Her three-year term ends in August 2012.
